I would like to be a Governor because I would be honoured to have the opportunity to help shape, develop and grow the future of mental health services across the Trust.

The skills and experience I would bring to the role are my strategic leadership skills which include empathy, innovation, reflection, evaluation, risk management, problem-solving, Gemba Walking to involve stakeholders at all levels and seeing around corners to support a proactive rather than reactive stance.

My relationship with the Trust is a professional one, although I have personal experience of the critical role of mental health services as utilised by both myself and my daughter. However I am Regional Manager for Saturn Healthcare Ltd who operate care homes across Norfolk and Suffolk providing LD, mental health, autism, dementia and elderly care, therefore I believe I am well placed in terms of both knowledge and skillset and the regulations around these.

In summary it would be an honour to be a Governor and I feel I could bring significant value to the Trust in this role.

Alastair Roy

I offer myself as a Governor in NSFT as I hope my increasing knowledge in community health and wellbeing may be an asset as well as my current role as Chair of AgeUK in Norwich .

Personal user contact with services and prior to retirement as a former CX in the NHS both managing and commissioning services for people requiring mental health intervention and support is my motivation to see improvements for the benefit of local people .

As evidence of commitment I applied last year but was not elected ( third out of three for two vacancies!!!)

My style ,as part of a team, is to listen well and try to deal with important questions after thought . I bring a desire not only to hold those responsible to account but also to be a force for good in supporting and championing the argument to achieve NSFT its fair share of resources and media coverage. Positive challenge balanced with a real desire for local people to gain confidence in the services provided- really important.

Meryl Rushmere

I am a retired nurse.

Since 1974, I worked across the NHS and private sector caring for children and adults in a variety of settings including at the Royal Bethlem and Maudsley, National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Queens Square, and St Christopher's Hospice, with Dame Cecily Saunders, and Dr Colin Murray Parkes before moving to Norfolk in 1985.

My most recent role was managing an MDT in Brain Injury Rehabilitation. I joined the AHM in 2014 and became a chairperson in 2023.

I am married with 2 children and 5 grandsons. We all live in North Norfolk.

I endeavour to bring kindness and empathy into my role and I strongly believe that we should always listen to each other - everyone has their own story. A holistic approach to medicine is something I feel very passionate about. I am open minded and non judgemental in my approach to life and practice yoga and meditation to support my own well being. I am very interested in the idea that reading poetry aloud can be used as therapy.

Amanda Sellick

I would like to be a governor to support my local community, old and young. rega

I have over my experienced personally and professionally the impact of mental wellbeing the difficulties in finding the right support, assessment, education and engagement especially in rural areas of North norfolk. I would like to change this for the older and younger people.

I have been a youth worker, social worker and currently life coach, counsellor and mental health first aider. I have seen the impact and heart ache of lack of resources, how to access them in rural areas. With my skills, empty and dedication, I want to give people a voice, unlock the stigma within schools employment, form collective holistic planning, assessment for individuals. For people to be heard supported and validated. Mental health is not a label, it is REAL.Affects everyone at some point in their life's it needs to be heard respected and validated. It's OK not to be OK we have you we here you.

Ryan Taaffe-Fowle

Having being born and raised in Norfolk, I have interacted with the NSFT on several levels, through multiple friends and family members using the service, to working for the NHS itself and referring to the trust. Through these experiences, I have developed a passion for wanting to drive standards and accessibility for the trust, and I believe this has given me a great range of experience to represent the public in doing so.

I have worked for the NHS since I was 18 years old in a variety of areas- from working for the ambulance service to hospital wards. I am currently employed as an Operations Manager in a Norfolk GP surgery, which has given me the ability to demonstrate my caring nature and ability to be an accountable team member in line with trust values. Here, I conduct Learning Disability and Severe Mental Illness annual reviews giving me frequent and valued time with service users, carers and a solid platform to meet with the public to be the voice required in this role.

Raymond Tunmer

I am passionate about service user, carer and family involvement in all planning across the trust and would ensure that the Trust remains accountable, transparent, and attuned to the needs of those it serves. This is underpinned by my involvement with service user, carer and family initiatives within the trust. I am a co-lead in the early intervention in psychosis services quality improvement project “return to care" and was nominated for the "positive impact" award for my role in it at the staff Excellence awards. I am part of the Lived Experience Advisory Group which is part of the MINDS project. Sarah Rae (co-lead) initiated the MINDS project based on her own difficult experience of discharge. The Lived Experience Advisory Group is made up of service users, carers and staff and provides feedback on systemic approach to discharge planning called the ‘Onwards Approach’. MINDS is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care . I also take part in recruitment panels as an expert by experience across the trust.

Eric Crossfield

I apply for election as a Public Governor for Suffolk where I live.

My simple yet passionate goal is to use my skills and considerable experience to help improve the health and wellbeing of others, especially service users or patients, their families and carers, for staff at NSFT and for the wider community that the Trust serves.

My experience in this work is wide ranging. Previously I was Lead Governor of Camden & Islington Foundation Trust, a mental health Trust in North Central London when I lived there.

I am a Patient and Public Voice (PPV) member for NHS England Armed Forces team, co-producing and launching OpCourage, the Veteran’s Mental Health and Wellbeing service, having been a former Royal Navy officer with lived experience of Complex PTSD. Thankfully I received superb treatment and now use my time and efforts to pay this back for the benefits of others in need.

I am compassionate, kind, a good communicator and a powerful advocate for improving mental health for us all. I respectfully ask for your vote.

Emily Gayfer

Hi, I am Emily, wife and mum of three, aiming to keep on top of the demands of day to day work and family life with happiness and gratitude! I am passionate about access to good mental health support for all.

I have both positive and negative lived experience of mental health services as a patient, a parent and within my working role over the last 15 years in a variety of children’s and family services.

I have collaboratively worked with a range of professionals in the public, private and voluntary sector giving me an insight into how the trust operates from a range of prospectives. I am approachable, reflective and feel I can offer an objective view.

My views are based on a trauma informed approach. I am particularly interested in advocating for families, to be able to represent a wide range of voices within this demographic.

Ultimately I would like to support development and positive change within the trust to meet the needs of our community.

Dr Liz Jupp

I have worked in the NHS as a psychiatrist in Suffolk for over 30 years until I retired 6 months ago.

My area of work has mostly been in the community with younger and working age adults. Until the Radical Redesign of services in 2013, I worked in the Assertive Outreach Team and Chilton Houses. Since 2013, I worked in CMHTs in Suffolk until March 2024.

The care of people with severe and enduring mental illness such as schizophrenia and psychosis has always been my area of interest. I have been a vocal advocate for improving the quality of care for this group of people in our community who are sometimes not in the best position to advocate for themselves. Sadly, I have witnessed a deterioration in the quality of care for people with enduring psychosis over the last 10 years and I would like to be a governor to help ensure NSFT makes the necessary changes to improve this situation.

Ian Lea

I retired from full time work in NHS mental health services 18 months ago after 38 years. I spent much of my career working as a family therapist in child, young people and families services as well as adult community services, including 10 years as head of eating disorder services in Essex. I have lived in Suffolk for the past 30 years or so with my family and my last post before retirement was as one of the psychological therapies leads within NSFT.

Some of my skills and experience lie within understanding how to navigate bringing quality, compassionate and kind evidence based treatment within difficult financial and resource limits. Additionally, I have skills in understanding how teams work well (or not). I think finding ways to include families, friends and other important relationships in mental health care is hugely important and often overlooked.

I've been passionate about including those who use services in how those services are run, including linking those experiences with commissioning decisions.

Dr Dinah Morley

My background is in social services and mental health with a special interest in the mental health of children and equality issues, working in social care and with YoungMinds before going on to reseach and teach on the mental health of mixed race young people and mental health topics more generally.

As a young person I experienced mental illness and feel passionately about access to services for young people.

Currently I am privileged to chair a local charity supporting people and their families at the end of life or with life limiting conditions. The charity fills a gap in support services for people living within a 15-mile radius of Halesworth and is a much appreciated local resource.

Through this work I hear a great deal about the gaps in services and the struggles people have in rural areas to access the support they need.

I believe I have a very relevant background for the post of governor and would like to use my experience and local knowledge to support the NSFT in its improvement journey.

Rhiannon Read

I am committed to improving mental health services and believe becoming a governor at NSFT offers a meaningful opportunity to support our community. Having witnessed the impact of mental health challenges on individuals and families, I am driven to advocate for accessible, compassionate care.

I am passionate about breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and ensuring everyone, regardless of their background, can access the support they need. I aim to ensure patients and families have a voice in shaping NSFT services, particularly those who feel marginalised or underserved.

As a governor, I would promote transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement within NSFT. My experiences have fostered empathy and a desire to make a positive impact on others' lives. Rebecca Kellaway

I am running for the role of Norfolk Service User Governor for many reasons. My main driving force is I want to live in a world where access to high quality mental health services are available to everyone who needs it. I believe we all deserve to be healthy and flourish in life. We all sometimes need help and support with this and it should always be there for us.

The skills I bring are, I'm open minded and fair. I am also stubborn and will fight for justice and equality for everyone! I am always kind and do my best to be sensitive so I feel I'm very approachable. More than that, I'm always keen to listen to people and put those voices forward.

I've been a service user of the trust only for a couple years and I've seen both the potential and the areas that need improving. I am keen to facilitate change and hold people to account!

Kerri Madders

I would like to be a governor to help make positive changes to service users mental health. I know through living alongside my own mental health illnesses and overcoming suicidal ideation how hard it can be to live with. I have a diagnosis of EUPD, agoraphobia, depressive and panic disorder as well as being recently tested for autism and have suspected CPTSD. I have an ability to be very understanding of peoples individual mental health and am passionate about making changes through positive interaction. My experience and skills come from my own experience of mental health and coping without medication whilst raising a family and accessing years of help from NSFT. I also gained experience and skills through meeting many with mental health problems/illness through being a member of The Black Dog Music Project, of which i became the chair of trustees in March 2023. I have also recently completed a BSc in computing & psychology and starting a MSc in computing in November. I also have some knowledge of ISO 45003, and ISO 40500.

Courtney Reeve

Whilst I may be young, by the time of turning 25, I have already used mental health services from a child to an adult, received varied care and survived myself after 4 suicide attempts, all whilst battling with self harm and complex emotional and relational needs...that makes me strong and brave, and why I know I would be a great governor.

Through these experiences I have gained a wealth of knowledge and understanding about life and just how hard it can be for some, this is exactly why I want to be a governor. I want to ensure that no one has the experiences I had, and if they do, help them and their support system through it and make the necessary changes that we all know the system needs. I'm also hugely proud of myself for my 80-hour work week as a dementia carer in the height of COVID, and that currently I am a major role in Particip8 volunteering AND a training facilitator with the KUF team in personality disorders. Jeremy Stelling

The Trust acknowledges facing significant challenges in refocusing the delivery of services. Its strategic priorities —to improve health, care, culture and value— are highly laudable; but properly attending to the lived experience of service users, their families and their carers must become an embedded driver in the achievement of sustainable reform.

I am diagnosed with PTSD, the result of experiences in early-childhood and as an adult; I was recently positively screened for ASD. Over the years, I have experienced some excellent care from the Trust but, too often, have noted alarming shortcomings in service provision.

A period serving on the governing body of a primary school has given me a good understanding of the governor role—providing the perspective of a critical friend to a leadership working to deliver improvement.

Since retiring from senior management in schools, I have undertaken several voluntary roles supporting people with poor mental heath and learning disabilities. I now seek to contribute to the strong governance that will be instrumental in NSFT's delivery of safer, kinder and better services for all.

Donald Timson

I think I should be elected because I’m passionate about improving mental health services and I hope I can support the Trust to grow which benefits service users.

I want to be a Governor because I care about mental well-being and want to help develop better services, a voice for our local community.

Being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult – and medicated a few years – has alleviated many struggles. Personal experiences, including a period being homeless (15+ years ago), supplies surprising solutions to problems from alternative perspectives.

Greenlight Champion (2018 until lock-down), speaking at public engagement events by representing service users. Thinking outside the box and contributing ideas on strategies around suicide prevention, learning disabilities, and adults with Autism in Norfolk. Very keen to listen to service users and provide feedback.

Balancing mental abilities with physical disabilities, gives me time to offer my energy to ensure that service users' voices are heard and meaningful improvements are made. Very excited about this opportunity to contribute and make a real difference to the Trust's future.

Stuart Warren

My vast experience with the NSFT both as a long-term patient and stakeholder, working alongside the organisation in various different roles, is the driving force behind wanting to become a governor and why I think I would be good at it. I first sought the help and support from the NSFT in 2009 when I was diagnosed with a mental health condition. Over the years I have received long and short-term care from community and hospital services. I’ve worked for various third sector agencies including Julian Support, the CAB, Genesis Housing and Equal Lives, the people I’ve supported have had some form of support from the NSFT at some point in their lives and I've seen firsthand how the service provided to patients impacts lives. I’m an excellent communicator, good team player and able to use my own initiative. I’m supportive towards others, fun to be around and I enjoy a challenge. If elected, I will work hard to improve care for all patients of the NSFT and be a voice for the voiceless.

James Dudman

I'd like to be a governor because I have suffered with mental ill health myself in the past, so have my friends and family. Through my experiences and hearing the experiences of others I want to do the best I can to improve our mental health services for everyone.

I have a mixture of listening, verbal, writing and analytical skills as well as having my own experiences of the mental health service that enables me to be a well rounded candidate for the role of governor. I am passionate about helping service users move in a positive direction so we can all feel more empowered by the services provided.

The Particip8 group has given me a lot of positive experiences with the trust and has been a first rate place of support for when I was at my lowest. I understand it is not everyone's perspective and I also have my not so positive experiences. Which is why I'm going to use the duality of those experiences to help change things for the better.

After attending Winchester College I enrolled at Oxford University to study Natural Sciences. I have also studied the works of R.D. Laing through psychotherapy & International Healthcare Management focusing on Sigmund & Martha Freud and negative reinforcement. I have also researched Cicero & the Ancient Romans a lot whilst studying Public Health & finally mental health law with special emphasis on the Celts and the Irish. I have been a service user for about ten years as after having a very traumatic experience in Thailand in 2012 now suffer from psychosis & hyper mania. I am volunteering in Woodlands Hospital for NSFT NHS & also work for Oxfam & the Samaritans! I think I would bring a lot of expertise to the board of governors through my lived experience & academic quality and always put the needs of the service user first & as a priority when it comes to mental health. I believe strongly in Prince William’s Charity CALM & used to be a member of the 12th Man Group. Thank You. Alex

Why I want to be a governor…

I want to be a governor to play an active role in improving the experience of service users across the Trust, by championing their voices, sharing good practice, highlighting where things are going well and working together with the Non-Executive Board to formulate strategies where improve is needed.

What skills and experience I would bring to the role…

I currently work as a Clinical Psychologist in the East Suffolk Older Adults service. I am skilled in assessing information and formulating strategies to work towards agreed goals. I also regularly work with Experts by Experience when undertaking service development. This, coupled with my passion to help the Trust improve, is what drives me to put my name forward.

My relationship / contact with the Trust….

I have worked as a Clinical Support Worker, Assistant Psychologist and now as a qualified Clinical Psychologist; observing and experiencing the Trust from multiple perspectives, including seeing my loved ones access services, with mixed results from prompt support and aftercare, to heartbreak in Coroner's Court.

Kevin Dade

I am employed as a Plumbing/Gas Engineer within the Maintenance Department currently acting up as a Maintenance supervisor and am also a Career for my Wife who is a Service user within the Trust. I have been a Health and Safety Rep and Shop Steward and held various Leadership and trainer Positions over my 35 years of work, Along with Looking after my Wife with long term complex needs and working for the trust it allows me to see both sides of the fence. Being a Governor would allow me the opportunity to help shape the trust to firstly improve the experience for service users and staff from a buildings maintenance perspective and secondly from a service user/careers point of view. Working for Maintenance my department/team have to manage what is realistic and what is practical within job requests received on a daily basis, Also working at every site we know what works in regards to design and procedures which i feel are skills suited to transferring to the board of governors.

Me: I’m KEV 35, been with my wife 14yrs, 5 children, ADHD & Tourettic disorder, and Bisexual. Role: Substantive at NSFT nearly 7yrs. AP in CAMHS (worked: CRHT, Acute, 136, PICU & Secure). Supplementary Roles: Equality Advocate, Culture Improvement, NHS Disability Leader. NSFT Activities: Board Reverse Mentor, MHSIJ Published Researcher. Previous Roles: A&E Nurse Auxiliary, LD Support Worker, Primary School Governor. Voluntary Roles: EAST Ambulance Community First Responder. Why Elect me: Being an NSFT Clinician and Patient is not easy. I’m judged and ostracized by colleagues daily and experience bullying and discrimination simply for neurodivergence, and being blunt, and direct. I fight everyday just to do my job due to stigma. If we aren’t living our values to our colleagues, how are our services safe and effective for patients? Therefore, if elected, I’ll strive to hold our leaders to account to make ‘OUR’ trust equitable for all stakeholders. Ali Newman

I am a Senior Clinical Support Team Administrator within the Learning Disabilities pathway, based at Walker Close, in Ipswich.

With 3 and a half years experience in the Trust, and 24 years in the Care and Supported sector, I feel I bring a passion for specialist services and the people who work in it. I would like to be able to represent LD Services, as I know many under this umbrella feel their voices aren’t heard. It would also bring a widespread wealth of knowledge to the Staff Governors’ representation – looking at the teams the other governors work in.

I am out going, friendly, approachable and enjoy meeting new people. I feel I could reach out to staff members across the Trust when looking for feedback, ideas and offer support when they need. Most of all I would be proactive in helping to make changes.

Alistair Page

As a candidate for Staff Governor, I am dedicated to ensuring that staff voices are heard, respected, and valued. With over a decade of experience in mental health services across the Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust and private sector, I understand the challenges we face as professionals and the need for better recognition, support, and inclusivity.

My roles as an Assistant Psychologist, Crisis Care Practitioner, Researcher, and Care Provider, combined with my experience in delivering training to staff from diverse backgrounds, have given me valuable insight into the difficulties faced in caring for our service users. This equips me to advocate effectively for our workforce.

I am committed to promoting a healthier, more supportive working environment where our concerns are addressed, and well-being prioritised. I will also be involved in launching a staff, carer, and service user’s forum, providing a platform for open communication with governors. This initiative will ensure that your concerns are not only heard but acted upon and your vote will enable me to advocate for positive change across our Trust.

I am standing for this election as I believe passionately in high quality, safe, and compassionate person-centred care. I am proud to work for this Trust despite the downs and want to help facilitate the ups as the Trust progresses in its continuous journey towards improvement.

I have worked in health and social care for 24 years, joining the Trust in 2018 where I am now a Bed Manager. Prior to this, I was registered by CQC to manage social care settings for several years and have experience in improving services that required improvement. As well as being an employee of the Trust, I have been a family carer and a service user myself from which I can bring lived experience.

My belief is that without good staffing, services cannot be delivered effectively or sustainably at the standards patients deserve. Engagement of staff on the front line of services and their experience is invaluable and should be equal to patients being at the centre of their own care. Together we can improve!
