Current Employment: Technical Director, Structronix Ltd Design of temporary structures for events sporting (eg Olympics, FIFA World Cup, Formula 1) Technical author, primarily on concrete structures Course tutor, covering concrete, steel, graduate development, CM exam preparation Structural inspections for domestic, commercial and retail buildings

Career History: Technical Director, Structronix Ltd (2023-present) Technical Director, Modulus Structural Engineering Ltd (2010-2023) Senior Engineer, MPA The Concrete Centre (2003-2010) Senior Engineer, Whitby Bird Ltd (1997-2003) Graduate Engineer, Norfolk County Council (1996) University of Salford BEng (1992-1996) Technician, Norfolk County Council (1990-1992)

Election Statement:

Being involved in panels and committees of the Institution has given me a good knowledge of what the institution has to offer its members and how it can contribute to society. I have a wide range of experience in the industry that I can draw on to be a part of shaping the future direction of the Institution to ensure that it continues to be a global player that shapes the direction of structural engineering. Having run my own business for a number of years, I understand the challenges facing sole traders and small businesses, who are often under-represented at board level. At the same time through delivering overseas training courses I have been able to appreciate issues facing engineers around the world and as the institution increases its international membership this is important. I understand how the IStructE operates and will quickly be able to contribute at meetings.

Q1: How will you contribute to achieving the Institution’s objects and strategy?

The Institution’s objects include the objective to promote for the public benefit the general advancement of the science and art of structural engineering. I strongly endorse the IStructE’s pioneering sustainability initiatives, which directly support the public benefit outlined in the Institution’s charter. I am committed to the development of the Institution; the number of Chartered Members has stagnated recently. I propose that strategies are developed to effectively engage with graduate engineers, giving them more certainty that they will pass the CM exam without compromising the highly regarded standards of the Member grade. This could be achieved by providing a comprehensive training programme and enhanced development support. AI is a key issue for the coming years and it is a challenge and an opportunity. The Institution should lead the way in making sure it is used safely in structural design by giving best practice guidance on how it should be used.

Q2: What specific skills & experience will you bring to the role?

I have broad experience in working with all the main structural materials, with a specialism in reinforced concrete; and have worked on very small to very large scale projects. I have worked in the public sector, private sector, for a trade association, and for the last 15 years, my own business. I have delivered training courses throughout the world and have benefited from understanding other cultures. All this will give me a holistic perspective when considering the strategies and policies of the Institution. Specific skills include being a trustee as a Church Warden and for a local charity, demonstrating the ability to discharge the trustee role. In owning a small business and employing staff there have been times when I needed to make uncomfortable and difficult decisions, but these have been taken with careful consideration, integrity and due process. I am actively involved with The Concrete Society and FIB(UK).

Q3: Describe any Institution activity/knowledge both regional and global (please include dates where possible):

Gary Elliott

Gary Elliott

Current Employment: CEO - Elliott Wood

Career History: I began my career as an Engineer at SB Tietz & Partners (1984–1985), then worked as an Associate at Drehurst Macfarlane (1985–1994). In 1994, I co-founded Elliott Wood alongside Paul Wood, serving as Managing Partner from the outset and becoming CEO in 2018.

Election Statement:

During the 40 years I have worked in the industry, 30 of those leading Elliott Wood, I have always seen our profession as one which can drive change. Over the last 7 years I have driven our business to be at the forefront of sustainability. We have written and collaborated on numerous sustainability initiatives and publications, many in conjunction with the IStuctE, to ensure we push the industry to do better. For example, our carbon tool donated to the industry via the institution, which has downloaded thousands of times, enabling a widespread positive impact on the industry. Having been co-chair of Structural Engineers Declare for the last two years I would welcome the opportunity to o elevate this to help steer the Institution to achieve better sustainability outcomes and to hold the leadership and our profession to account.

Q1: How will you contribute to achieving the Institution’s objects and strategy?

One of the Institution’s key objectives is to integrate sustainability into structural engineering practice something which drives me personally and drives the organisation that I lead. Whilst this has been elevated hugely within the institution, particularly with the appointment of Will Arnold, this needs to be fully represented with a sustainability champion on the Board. In addition to this, as a co-founder and CEO of a dynamic consultancy I have an entrepreneurial skillset possibly different to others. I am very familiar with business and strategic planning for growth and can help steer the leadership to achieving better outcomes. I am used to challenging the status quo around sustainable solutions within engineering and business strategy and believe I can bring this knowledge, mindset and challenge to the institution.

Q2: What specific skills & experience will you bring to the role?

Building Elliott Wood from 2 to 150+ people, I understand the complexities of running a business, strategic planning, vision, and creating purpose. At the heart of this, I am an engineer involved with strategic technical input on projects requiring innovation, particularly where carbon reduction is high on the agenda. I know how to influence to achieve better outcomes, and my passion for sustainability has been a catalyst for creating a significant consultancy team within our organisation, driving positive change throughout our business and the industry. I am responsible for culture and values within Elliott Wood and have led diversification into other disciplines and associated businesses to aid growth and protect against external threats. My recent participation in the Regenerative Design programme has pushed my thinking beyond sustainability to regenerative design. It’s clear there is much our industry can improve, an opportunity the Institution must guide and lead, not simply mandate.

Q3: Describe any Institution activity/knowledge both regional and global (please include dates where possible):

As a Fellow of the Institution, I have demonstrated many years of experience, leadership and influence for a sustained period with significant engagement with CPD. Setting up and running a business has been all consuming and I see now as a time where I can use that my experience to influence key stakeholders to effect change within the industry, for the better. As a business, we have contributed significantly to the Institution and the industry through a number of publications and the donation of the carbon tool. I co-chaired Structural Engineers Declare (SED) for the last two years and helped set up the format for the regular on-line sessions and the annual summit. I remain involved with shaping the programme going forwards.

As a PRI reviewer and active member of the membership committee, I am committed to upholding the standards of the institution

I actively encourage knowledge sharing through workshops and industry events, particularly with respect to using building retrofit to reduce embodied carbon.

Q2: What specific skills & experience will you bring to the role?

I have a keen focus on both knowledge sharing and mentoring which make me well suited to supporting the Institution in these areas. Having spent many years undertaking STEM activities and lecturing at local universities as well as at conferences about Building Retrofit, I am well practiced at presenting to others and advocating for sustainable development and the need to re-use existing buildings to support the transition to net zero.

Previously I have also been a member of a sub-committee advising the Welsh Government on 'Women in STEM', later re-branded as 'Equity in STEM' which focused on the barriers experienced by some groups to entering the sector and the issues associated with retaining people in the industry, particularly those returning to work after a career break. As a working mother I have a keen interest on supporting those with caring responsibilities to feel valued in the industry.

Q3: Describe any Institution activity/knowledge both regional and global (please include dates where possible):

I have been involved with the Wales branch committee for many years and served as chair from 2021 to 2023 during the restructuring of the regions (S4S). I am still an active member of the local committee and help to organise events locally. I have been a PRI assessor for several years.

IStructE Council - 2021-2023 and currently for third term as Membership Committee Representative

Mentoring (elevate) - 2025

I am a STEM ambassador with a focus on encouraging more students to consider a career in Engineering. I am an apprentice ambassador and promote the inclusion of apprenticeship schemes and support local apprentices. I am actively involved in mentoring, at all stages of career (including Fellowship) and have supported many candidates to achieve chartered status with the Institution (TIStructE, AIStructE and MIStructE).
