Dr Adiba Begum

Dr Adiba Begum BSc, MPhil(Sc), PGCE, MBChB, MRCGP

I have lived in the Heartlands constituency since birth; so belong to and understand the community I wish to represent. The pandemic has demonstrated our vulnerability.

Being a Governor of the Trust would enable me to work for a better future for us all through the elimination of health inequalities and the delivery of excellent health care.

Caring as a child for my late mother has given me a long-term perspective on hospital provision. This has continued with my own health problems; as well having a husband and children with serious, long-term health issues. This inspired me to study medicine as a mature student.

I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2011. The majority of my training was within the hospitals now forming the UHB Trust. I currently work locally as a GP; this has deepened my knowledge of the diverse needs and commensurate healthcare issues facing this community.

Previously, as a governor at a local school, I enjoyed working as part of a team to make positive contributions to further develop it. I believe my naturally enquiring; analytical mind combined with compassion; I can contribute positively as a governor.

I am passionate about the continued developments of the health services provided by the Trust. These are not without challenges but, by working together, we can strive to continue to make improvements. It would be a great privilege to contribute to the further development of the Trust and serve my community.

Gerry Moynihan

We all know how important OUR NHS is, and we are all passionate about its future. I’m passionate about ensuring we have a FREE, safe, efficient, caring, and value for money NHS.

I wish, with your support, to ensure OUR hospitals, especially HEARTLANDS provide the highest standard of care for you and your family. We deserve a compassionate, honest and accountable hospital service, that learns from mistakes and strives for patient safety.

For over 20 years I’ve volunteered for our NHS, gaining experience in NHS scrutiny and governance. I have graduate and post graduate legal qualifications, and extensive experience in NHS governance, all of which I will use to serve your interests.

I feel I have maturity combined with passion, experience and commitment to help make Heartlands a better hospital, and to be accountable to you.

Faizah Maryam

My name is Faizah Mustafa, and I am really keen to apply for this exciting position at a time when I am ready for my next stage and development as I have the relevant skills and over twenty years’ board level experience. I am excited to join an organisation which shares my values and where I can make a difference to health inequalities and workforce inequalities which are hugely critical at this time. I would also like the opportunity to bring a fresh perspective and play a fundamental role in developing stronger links between the trust and the community it serves and represent the interests of members and the public. I am passionate about our workforce, our patients, and the future of the NHS; ensuring we deliver the best possible service for the most vulnerable people as well as representing the people in Birmingham Heartlands; ultimately improving the health of our patients and communities through delivering the best in clinical care. I want to contribute to championing person-centred care, and act in the best interests of patients and the local community. My passion has extended to proudly volunteering at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. I am also undertaking an MSc in Healthcare Leadership at the University of Birmingham helping to improve my personal impact and bring positive and productive changes to my team, organisation, services, and patients. Satish Kumar Seniaray

I am community Worker and have served the local temple in the capacity of General Secretary and Vice President. I helped elderly young and women with their general problems, whether they related to Health or Benefit services. I also accompanied elderly to the GP surgery and also helped as an Interpreter. I can speak three Asian languages. I am also member of my GP Patient consultation advisory group and attend meetings with the Surgery manager. I am aware of the problems encountered by Asian community members in assessing health services at the GP and Hospitals.

I have been a Governor at the Grove School,Dawson Road, Handsworth and Handsworth wood Boys school. I also was General secretary of the local police consultative committee in Handsworth in the 1980's. I worked as a Housing Professional and dealt with all sorts of problems encountered by the tenants, including Mental Health issues, mobility issues, Disability and antisocial behaviour. I am aware of the specific needs and demands of the residents in the localities I worked. I was able to work with different agencies to help my customers with their varied needs.

I am member of my UNION and also member of recognised. National British Political party. I attend Constituency Party meetings and discuss the local issues and residents individual concerns. I have good contact with the local councillors and member of Parliament in the Birmingham West Constituency. If elected Governor I will strive to work for the local people and improve services for all.

I have been the public governor for Birmingham West since July 2022 and have done my best to fulfil the role and hold the Board and Directors to account for due process.

Joseph Murphy

I am a life long resident of south Birmingham having been educated in Harborne.

I am passionate about the provision of public services in supporting the needs of the local community. This should be done within an open and transparent process and be respectful of all parties.

I am retired having spent over 40 years providing land and property valuations to Health Authorities and Government Agencies.

This has included developing Doctors Surgeries and visiting health properties from clinics to regional psychiatric secure units. I have provided advice to meet the changing needs of healthcare, such as the provision of a more local patient focused service.

I have recently spent a year working for West Midlands Ambulance Service in an operational Ambulance Station. This has made me increasingly aware of the operational difficulties of providing front line services and the bottlenecks within the healthcare system and community care provision.

This has also highlighted the opportunities to improve the service experience and outcomes for both users and providers of healthcare.

I hold a Diploma in Heath and Social Care with a particular interest in Community Care.

I have held a number of Local Community Voluntary roles in the past including being a former Scout Leader and School Governor in Weoley Castle.

I was a Director of Community Charity for over 5 years including the provision of a Nursery and Elderly Day Care in West Heath Birmingham.

I would welcome the opportunity to represent the local community on the University Hospitals Birmingham board.

Priya Rupal

I am passionate about becoming a governor for the NHS due to my own experiences within health care and feel that it is vital for me to help support patients who have been in a similar position. I have been a patient with the NHS since the age of 14, when I was diagnosed with my autoimmune disease. Since then, I have worked with a range of consultants across dental dermatology, eye consultancy, and urology fields. I have developed strong connections with all my consultants, Dr. Rauz, Dr. Andrea Richards, and Dr. Helen Lewis amongst many others, who have supported me along my journey of discovery with my rare condition. I have already contributed to research by having medical photos of my body published in medical journals, which are now used to educate, future doctors. I have also been invited to attend a medical seminar with Dr. Rauz. I am a kind, patient and caring individual, who is able to make connections with others due to my own experiences. I am not afraid to stand up for what is the best for our patients, in our community. Having overcome obstacles involved in my own health to become a businesswoman in the local community, I am passionate in ensuring that other people are not held back because of their health. If I am considered, I would love the opportunity to be able to have patients' voices heard in order to help improve our NHS and support our community.

I feel therefore I have a good understanding of how the QE Hospital functions over the years.During my time as a volunteer I built up both an empathy and trust with the staff I saw regularly and patients I met on the wards on that specific day.Enjoyed the different aspects and varied roles that being a volunteer at the QE Hospital presented.

Kathleen Bell

As a retired Registered General Nurse, patient care has always been my passion and priority. Working in Ophthalmics, School Nursing, District Nursing and Nursing Care Homes, contributed to my experience of children, elderly and dementia care.

Experiencing both sides of healthcare, my personal experience of nursing and supporting family and friends through strokes, endometrial cancer, brain and prostate cancers, hip replacements and transplants provides a broader experience of community and hospital interventions.

While supporting Breast and other local Cancer Support Groups my interests continue in heart disease, elderly care, diabetes, dementia and thyroid conditions.

As the British Thyroid Foundation (BTF) West Midlands Local Co-ordinator I support thyroid patients with meetings and the many telephone calls I receive from patients.

With experience of serving on Patient Experience and Finance Committees and currently serving on UHB Care Quality Group, UHB Constitution Group, UHB School of Nursing Committee and Solihull Hospital Patient, Carer and Community Council, I also attend UK seminars and conferences.

I am passionately committed to ensuring that patients are at the forefront of healthcare and are treated with dignity and respect, that patients are listened to and given the best possible healthcare, helping patients receive the right care at the right time, in the right place,

I believe that in addition to working together, while holding hospital boards to account, questioning areas of concern and challenging when necessary, governors must act as advocates and representatives of patients, their families and carers and that is always my aim.

Anthony Bradley

I have a personal connection to UHB, my late daughter received treatments at Maxo facial, Surgical, Cancer, including Radiotherapy and chemotherapy departments and finally end of life care. All this while Covid was at its height. The care and compassion that she received was both professional and exceptional.

I am currently the Governor for the Black Country with the West Midlands Ambulance NHS University Trust and as so I am well aware of the strains that UHB are under. This role has given me an increased understanding of service and improvements that could be made on both sides. I have given presentations and reports to Hospital boards, ICBs, GP surgeries, schools and local faith groups. I am an ambassador for Freedom to Speak up.

I have seen the dark side of life while the pandemic was at its height. I saw the pressure and worries all the staff faced, on the wards, there were smiles and tears, but always hope.

I am passionate of this Hospital Trust, and make the promise to work tirelessly to push for an even better Trust, a Trust that is inspiring and positive, a Trust that we all can rightly be proud of.

Elizabeth (Liz) Brasnett

Relevant Experience

A retired NHS Manager with a professional qualification in Nursing and Public Health , working practically in InnerCity Birmingham which gave an opportunity to work with minority groups to understand the culture and religious beliefs. Later gaining managerial experience and pursuing a Masters of Business Administration. Final position held as Assistant Director of Nursing.

Community

Chair of the local Parish HalI with a team of committee members to provide activities for all ages . A continual interest in Health and Social Care as a board member of the Royal College of Nursing representing Herefordshire. Volunteered at the local hospital to assist with Clinical Governance in relationship to ‘Near Misses’ and ‘Critical Incidents’. Currently Safeguarding Officer for the Parish Church Council (PCC)which entails supporting other members of the (PCC)in the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and adults in the local community. In 2022 volunteered at the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham. The role involved meeting and signposting Commonwealth attendees visiting the Sandwell Aquatics Centre .

John Hallett

I became very ill during 2012 with both kidney and liver failure. For 18 months I was hospitalised at the QE with regular dialysis and being prepared for a combined kidney / liver transplant. With first class care by everyone at the hospital I miraculously improved to the extent that I was discharged and didn’t need the transplant. The QE is truly a centre of excellence and I would like to be elected to the Council of Governors and lend my energy and support in a positive way.

Since recovery I have been involved in 2 local charities, Mentorlink and Onside Advocacy. With Mentorlink I mentor school children up to the age of 16 who have anxiety and depression issues. At Onside Advocacy I run a Mens Group in Droitwich for men who have anxiety and depression issues with weekly prescribing.

I enjoy life and am grateful for the QE for giving me my life back as I know how precious good health is.

Jemma Stone

I lived in Northfield, Birmingham from 2004 - 2007 and worked as a Supply Teacher in and around Birmingham Schools. I also worked as an Advocate for Birmingham Carers at the time, which made me aware of existing issues working with various families across the City. I set up in Business in 2005, which provided Tutoring and Support-Work. I would attend meetings and forums at the Uffculme Centre, representing what I do for others in a caring role. This sparked up an interest in becoming a Governor back then, so that I could positively inform others of ways in which we can implement change. I live in Shropshire now, so I would be better placed in covering England and Wales aswell as having an avid interest in supporting the NHS mental health Trust across Birmingham. I've just finished a role in Care, working with Adults with Autism and Learning Difficulties. I spent 4 years, driving and supporting the residents there in their every-day care and daily routine. I am a mother of one, a 14 year old who is growing up fast in Today's Society and whilst supporting him through changes, I feel I've got the right attitude and positive Mind-set needed to influence, inform and suggest, helping to instigate change in an ever-evolving environment. I have over twenty five years experience of working with people and I am grounded, patient, flexible, direct and confident. I have a variety of different skills combined, to act and deliver.

Stan Baldwin

Hello.

I am asking for your vote so that I can continue to serve as your volunteer Governor for Solihull and Meriden. I have an excellent record of commitment and achievement. I can point to practical improvements I have prompted in areas such as patient experience, hospital environment, carer support and complaints handling. I was thanked for the role I played in the important decision to bring the Minor Injuries unit back to Solihull. The work continues.

My extensive public and voluntary sector experience is a big help. This includes serving nine years as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust. This is particularly useful experience as one of the roles of a Governor is to hold our UHB Non-Executives to account, on behalf of Members.

For many years I worked developing youth and community services in Birmingham. I have held senior posts in the fields of Education, Sport and Health Services. I was Vice Chair of Governors at Solihull College. For six years I served as Chief Executive of Wyre Forest District Council. Effective working between Health Trusts and local Councils is vitally important.

Pressures on the NHS continue. However complex the picture, I am determined to ensure the voice of the patient and the carer continue to be heard.

Emma Hall

As a health professional for thirty years, have the privilege to meet and care for many inspiring people. I strive to provide the highest standard of care possible and always want to make a difference.

I have applied be a Governor for UHB as would like to see every person treated with dignity and respect and where care fails, want to be able to question why.

I am not applying for this role as a health professional, but as a daughter who sadly witnessed appalling care being given to her Mother within one of the hospitals. My Mother was very sadly dying from cancer and desperately ill. Throughout her stay, where she sadly passed away, I was disgusted and ashamed of what she had to endure and the lack of care provided. I was my Mother's voice as she was too weak and too unwell. The memories I have of my Mother lying in the hospital, will haunt me forever and I would not want any family to witness what I did. To be the representative and voice of my community, I am very proud to be a Silhillian, both born and raised and want to be able to ensure that UHB excels at delivering services to meet the needs of my community. To also be able to seek assurance on performance from the Directors and question and challenge when there have been possible failures in care that could have been avoided, instead of lessons being learnt after the event.

Martin Lambert

My career has been in the private sector namely the Automotive and Rail Industries where I have held senior management and director level appointments.

Since retiring i have held and continue to hold voluntary roles with Solihull and Leamington Rail Users Association,Friends of the Shakespeare Line,Shakespeare Line Rail User Group,as both Chairman and Vice Chairman.I was previously Chair of my Local Residents Association.

Although I enjoy good health myself my eldest son has a blood disorder which requires regular treatment at the QE Hospital,so I see the workings of the NHS at first hand.

I consider that I could bring a life time of experience to this role and I am willing to discuss further if required.

Anne McGeever

I am passionate about the NHS providing quality care, implementing high standards while ensuring a safe and positive patient experience. I wish to continue to serve as your local volunteer Governor.

As a local resident, mother and qualified healthcare professional I have inside knowledge of the local community and how the NHS provides its service within this. I know how and where to raises issues and concerns. I am on a career break from the NHS having worked in the NHS for over 20 years as a clinician and middle manager.

In my professional role I provided treatment to patients, managed clinical services and staff across three hospital sites. I dealt with highly complex issues, managed budgets and projects. I am currently an elected Governor at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (including Solihull Hospital) and a representative on patient committees within the Trust.

I want to influence how care is delivered locally and that the local population is served. I am a strong advocate for local views and strive to protect and enhance the way clinical services are delivered. I am passionate about promoting safe and best clinical practice as well as high standards of care. I constructively challenge the Trust management board in their decisions regarding healthcare delivery and financial management.

My knowledge, experience and skills will be an asset for both the community and the Trust. I am experienced in how healthcare is delivered and to be a voice for patients, carer’s and their families.

Mary Casey

I have lived in Sutton Coldfield for twenty years and been a patient at both Good Hope and Solihull hospitals in the last year.

While I am grateful for, and appreciate the strengths of these hospitals within the Trust, I can see areas for development to which I feel I could make a valuable contribution if elected as a Governor.

I am active in Sutton Coldfield as a School Governor and lecture part time at a local College.
As a former Magistrate, I worked with people from many backgrounds and areas of diversity.
I chaired in the Criminal and Family courts and was elected to the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee.
I now volunteer with Citizen’s Advice, supporting witnesses in Court.

I helped set up my Dentist’s Patient Participation Group and have also been a Trustee of Anawim, Birmingham’s Support Centre for Women.
I attend the Council meetings of the Trinity Ward in Sutton Coldfield.
I hope I am a good listener and always use my skills to communicate the needs of our local community which I have the time and energy to support.
In my spare time I enjoy socialising, the theatre and walking my dogs.

If elected as a Governor of the Trust I would continue to use these skills to work effectively with the Board for the benefit of the people of Sutton Coldfield.

Ivan Ratschkewycz

The motivation to stand as a Governor comes primarily from becoming a 'frequent flyer' of UHB Facilities since I had my first stroke at the end of March 2021 and sampling a variety of specialities ever since. Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurosurgery, Physiotherapy, Urology, Ophthalmology and Radiology come to mind.

As a result of my second stroke and a bad case of Cellulitis, I was hospitalised for 6 weeks in May/June 2023 as an in-patient at Good Hope, Heartlands and Solihull Hospitals and now have to rely upon Patient Transport Services since being discharged.

These, and many other, events have given me a lot of experience of being a patient of UHB and Sandwell/West Bimingham Trusts and West Midlands Ambulance Services which I feel gives valuable perspective to being a Public Governor.

My other salient prior knowledge comes from my 30 year career in Information Technology working on Public Sector Projects in the areas of Capacity Planning, Statistics and Programming..
