Manifesto
I started studying with the OU in 2015, and am studying towards a degree
in Business Management, currently studying Strategic Management. I quickly
became involved with the Student Association, holding various roles over
the last 7 years. This included being a Central Committee Representative,
Senate Reference Group Member and Central Executive Committee member
(Roles: Vice President Community in 2016-2018, Deputy President 2018-2020
STEM Faculty representative 2021-2022).
Volunteering has given me the opportunity to broaden my skill set and
knowledge base on how the University is governed, its structures and
procedures. I have a good understanding of the Higher Education Sector,
Academic Governance, Quality Monitoring, Assurance and Enhancement. I am
confident in meetings within the Students Association and the University,
and have committee experience, including within confidential meetings. I
have sat on governance committees and attended high-level university
meetings, including Senate as a replacement.
I understand that the student member of Council needs to take a strategic
and analytical approach to this role, ensuring that decision-making is
beneficial for the University while bringing in the student perspective. I
have experience as a charity Trustee, and have backgrounds in accounting,
project development, report writing, strategic planning and student voice
work. I am a dedicated and experienced volunteer; with the time,
capability, and experience to fulfil this role, and have a passion for
what the Open University does and represents. I will be a committed member
of the Student Leadership Team, supporting Student Association work while
strengthening the Student Voice.
Pledges
I will be an advocate for protecting the interests of the university,
ensuring that the student perspective is heard in high-level
decision-making.
I will take an objective approach when raising issues around the
University’s institutional governance and academic provision, including
when it impacts the student experience.
In 100 words, how will you seek to uphold the Association’s mission to
make a positive difference for all OU students and our values of
integrity, equality and inclusivity, openness, kindness and compassion and
collaboration?
Kindness and Compassion – I am friendly and supportive to others, showing
empathy and understanding. I am mindful of other people’s feelings and
thoughts
Openness – I will set a positive example by demonstrating openness,
trustworthiness, fairness, honesty, and accountability within my role.
Integrity - I will be reliable and work ethically; while supporting,
encouraging, and empowering others.
Collaboration – I work well with others, based on mutual trust and
respect. I will encourage innovation, ideas and recognise individuality.
Equality and Inclusion – I recognise the diversity within our student
community, and will ensure everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
Why do you feel it is important for Students to be involved in high level
decision making at their University?
Students have a unique and valuable viewpoint, and a different perspective
compared to university personnel.
We have the chance to improve university governance, represent the
student’s association, and defend the interests of the collective student
body, by actively contributing to discussions that inform high-level
decision-making.
We can identify areas for enhancement or improvement, working with the
University strategically to develop academic provision, so that they can
maintain a high-quality student experience.
We can influence change by participating in strategic and constructive
dialogue, within formalised governance structures of the institution,
taking a holistic view while protecting the interests of students.
