Election Statement

I am proud to describe myself as a project delivery professional with over 24 years of public service.

My own journey to where I am today would be unimaginable to the person I was when I started my career at the most junior level in the Civil Service in the Maritime & Coastguard Agency. It was people in this profession that took a chance on me. I left that organisation as its interim Chief Executive but not before I successfully delivered projects on the Government’s Major Projects Portfolio.

I went on to work for Sellafield Ltd, an altogether different organisation but with an equally shared ambition to professionalise project delivery so that projects always succeed through a healthy blend of learning and experience.

Today I work for the Trinity House Corporation as its Major Projects Director. This is an organisation that is over 500 years old. My focus right now is on procuring two large multi-purpose ships for the organisation.

As this profession has given so much to me, I have been determined to give the same back. This is why I happily chair project delivery accreditation panels as a Senior Practitioner and assess participants at the end of their journeys on the Major Projects Leadership Academy. As an APM Trustee, I'd offer unconditional support, wisdom and constructive challenge.

I am dedicated to this profession and the work of the APM. I want to be able to help shape its future strategy, delivering a better future for the profession.

Please outline any previous experience as a company director, charity trustee or committee member

I am a Board and Executive Team member with over seven years’ experience in those roles. My most senior appointment was as interim Chief Executive of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency. In that role I led my Executive Team and drew on the broad range of experience from outside of my organisation that resided in my non-executive directors.

In my current role, I am the Major Projects Director for Trinity House, which is a corporation comprising the largest endowed charity in the UK and an Arms Length Non-Departmental Public Body. This is a Board and Executive Team level role.

What diverse qualities, skills and experience would you bring to the APM Board?

My 24 years of experience will bring a mixture of high value and complex project delivery and organisational leadership. My project delivery experience spans the maritime, aviation and nuclear sectors.

I chair Government project delivery accreditation panels as a Senior Project Delivery Practitioner. I also assess participants under going the Major Projects Delivery Academy at the end of their journey.

I have led small teams and large, always striving to improve inclusion to build stronger diversity and equity. This experience gives me the ability to offer support, wisdom and constructive challenge to the APM Board.

What contribution would you make to support APM in achieving its vision?

I share the APM’s ambition for a future where all projects succeed and do so through seamless blend of learning and experience.

An effective professional body like the APM provides a route through which project delivery professionals with vast experience and those just starting their project delivery careers can access essential resources, be professionally recognised and provide a community of peers that can learn from one another.

At this stage of my career, I am determined to give more back to the community that has helped me succeed as a highly experienced project delivery professional.

Election Statement

My nomination is inspired by a desire to shape the profession through bringing about innovation, at a time the world faces unprecedented challenges such as climate change, energy security, and poverty. As an elected APM Trustee, I'd hope to act as a member’s voice to challenge the status quo and drive innovative thinking towards achieving APM's vision.

The APM is the only chartered membership organisation in the world for the project profession, and as such, bestows responsibilities on the board as key decision makers and influencers; a responsibility I would relish as we move forward to tackle global challenges.

During a career spanning 30 years as a project professional I am proud to have supported my profession through continually applying my leadership skills and delivery experience to drive innovation within the businesses I have served. Bringing people together to reach consensus has been key to my success, and an essential skill I will bring to the board to foster progressive change as an APM Trustee.

My proven ability to think and operate strategically and work collaboratively across complex, fast-growing, mega project organisations will enable me to support change within the APM to deliver a better future for our communities.

As a Trustee and senior project professional I am keen to collaborate with our partners to ensure members interests are fully represented, whilst driving transformation of high quality services through improving performance and productivity of the project management communities both in the UK and globally.

Please outline any previous experience as a company director, charity trustee or committee member

I have continually sort new ways to shape the profession by influencing, developing and implementing good practice, this being evident through my work as a volunteer and elected committee member, of the Specific Interest Group for Programme Management from March 2015 to May 2017. I served on the SIG committee as the Publications Officer when I led, as document manager and co-author the development of the 2nd Edition of APM’s Introduction to Programme Management, launched in September 2016.

Leading strategic programme development at board level I have supported sponsors to introduce enterprise wide efficencies across the nuclear waste management sector.

What diverse qualities, skills and experience would you bring to the APM Board?

I am a self aware team player who will contribute to APMs vision, mission and values by thinking strategically and working collaboratively with the Board to frame direction. I will and use my transformational leadership style to promote our vision and drive the strategic themes and objectives.

My enthusiasm will add an essential ingredient bringing energy and drive to the Board. Being open minded with a strong commitment to continual learning I will use my 30 years delivery experience, in-depth project and programme management knowledge and leadership skills to challenge the status quo and drive change.

What contribution would you make to support APM in achieving its vision?

My contribution to supporting APM's vision will be accomplished through advancing the science and theory of project management. By working collaboratively with the board, membership communities and partners we will increase the success rate of infrastructure mega schemes using AI driven agent-based simulation technologies to empower project organisations to predict and influence organisational behaviour, early in the delivery lifecycle, to maximise organisational effectiveness and operational performance.

By viewing delivery organisations as a socially complex system could agent-based modelling be used to simulate behaviours to understand the individual and collective actions and interactions of programme stakeholders?

Election Statement

Because when projects succeed society benefits. Throughout my working life I have sought to serve society. Firstly, as an officer in the Royal Engineers where I learned the military approach to planning and delivering successful projects. More recently, as a consultant project manager specialising as a project troubleshooter, with a focus on dispute resolution through project success. Most recently as the Head of Project Management for AtkinsRéalis where I have built a community of project professionals focused on leading successful projects. I have long recognised the need for professionalism in projects. I volunteered to build and lead the business’ relationship with the APM in order to understand professionalism and partner with a leading institution. On receipt of the Royal Charter, I was one of the first to follow route 3 to ChPP in order to develop an internal programme to support ChPP candidates and I have supported the team developing our Route 2 qualification. I actively encourage our Subject Matter Experts to lead the profession through engagement with the APM Networks, thought leadership and conference speaking. I will soon be leaving AtkinsRéalis, moving into a more portfolio phase of my career focused on my charitable interests. I am keen to use the additional time I have to continue to serve society through supporting the APM as a board trustee bringing a wealth of experience in ensuring projects succeed.

Please outline any previous experience as a company director, charity trustee or committee member

I have extensive experience on committees supporting large organisations and as a trustee of smaller charities. As treasurer of a sailing club, I learned the importance of longer term budgeting in a volunteer organisation with lump sum outgoings and limited income. As development officer for a local scout group I learned the importance of vision and communication in taking a whole community forward in an endeavour. As chair of a constituency political party I have lead strategy development in supporting and building the local community. An as trustee of many charities I understand the role of the trustee

What diverse qualities, skills and experience would you bring to the APM Board?

As a white, British, Christian male I may not appear diverse. However, as a Sandhurst trained officer who has applied the principles of leadership in many cultures globally, I bring a diverse understanding of the insight of different cultures on project thinking. Having successfully transferred from one industry to another through my career, I bring a diverse understanding of transferable project skills. As a dyslexic, I have a lifetime’s experience in overcoming barriers to the neuro divergent and an openness to the opportunities offered by the different thinking frameworks the neuro divergent have to offer.

What contribution would you make to support APM in achieving its vision?

I have had a career engaging in building the project profession to ensure projects succeed so that society can benefit. I am open to supporting the APM Board in any way and recognise the significant commitment expected of a Board member. My experience in building a national and international community of Project Professionals in AtkinsRéalis will enable me to support the APM Team in both developing community through the Networks and crossing cultural divides as the APM seeks to become more international. Through my experience as a project trouble shooter I can advise on questions of improving project success.

Election Statement

I joined APM 35 years ago and have enjoyed a rich and varied career as a professional Project Manager. Originally focused on the technical aspects of civil engineering projects, my career later developed in the contractual aspects of improving project management by reforms in contractual mechanisms while serving on the Legal Affairs Committee at the institution of Civil Engineers. Career progression took me into managing complex multidisciplined projects as a Director of a Plc providing consultancy services where I develop a project management business unit, Interest in contractual affairs and project management converged after undertaking a Masters in Construction Law and Arbitration which in 2010 spawned a new career resolving disputes on problem projects. For the last 10 years I’ve been engaged as a project management consultant in East Africa on a large portfolio of donor funded infrastructure projects worth over US$ 2.5 billion many of which had run into difficulties. The combination of project management discipline and dispute resolution skills helped pull these contracts back on track with successful completions to the mutual satisfaction of the parties. From this I have learned there is a great shortage of project management skills and knowledge, so I have been actively engaged in capacity building and knowledge transfer. I see a massive opportunity for well-trained professional project managers to become involved. If elected, I would seek to pass on and give back my invested knowledge to promote the profession and enhance opportunities for Members internationally through APM.

Election Statement

As I come to the end of my 3-year tenure as an APM Board Member and Deputy Chair, it’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed. It’s been an extraordinary experience, and I am eager to continue contributing through a second term.

With 29 years of experience in planning, project control, and project management, I bring knowledge gained from a career across a diverse array of complex projects, programmes, and portfolios. The APM plays a pivotal role in elevating project management as a recognised profession across all its disciplines. My passion lies in furthering the recognition of planning and project control, areas where I have dedicated much of my career in addition to project data analytics—skills, capabilities, and behaviours I currently champion within BAE Systems and through my work with the APM and its collaborative partners.

I firmly believe success in our profession is building strong collaborations, recognising that no single approach can solve the complex challenges of consistently delivering successful projects. As a naturally collaborative leader, I see a tremendous opportunity for the APM to continue fostering partnerships with other global organisations, promoting the growth of chartered professionals on an international scale.

If elected to the APM Board for a second term, I will remain a passionate advocate for these areas.
