Nominate

At Applied Microbiology International (AMI) we fundamentally believe that microbiology can solve the world’s greatest challenges and that global issues need to be solved by global teams. To help us achieve this we are looking for new members to join our team as trustees on the AMI Executive Committee from July 2024. Our trustees play a vital role and responsible for strategic decision-making which contributes to the successful running of the organisation.

AMI believes that success is built on having teams whose backgrounds and personal experiences reflect the diversity of our membership base. It is not necessary to have previous board committee experience as training will be provided. Qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to their race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

Nominations are invited from AMI members who would like to serve as a trustee for a period of three years. Four candidates will be presented to AMI’s members for election in May / June 2024. AMI’s Elected Trustees are elected for a three-year term of office.

About the role
The EC is AMI’s governing body, which comprises thirteen trustees, each of whom are responsible for strategic decision-making which contributes to the successful running of the organisation.

The Trustees play a vital role in making sure that AMI achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that AMI has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the senior leadership team to enable AMI to grow and thrive.

Along with the Chief Executive of AMI, the EC ensure the effective management and custody of all AMI assets as they are used to deliver the organisation’s charitable objectives.

You can find out more about the legal responsibilities of trustees in this publication prepared by the Charity Commission (click here).

What we are looking for

  • A microbiologist who can demonstrate a commitment to the Vision, Mission and Values of AMI. For more information, see AMI Our purpose (appliedmicrobiology.org)
  • An individual who will bring energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the role.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a trustee.
  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

You do not need previous governance experience – we will provide a full induction and training.

The time commitment
The EC meets at least three times per year, these meetings are held via Teams and organised at a time which accommodates trustees based across the globe. Once per year we hold a face to face meeting in the UK. All meetings have a formal agenda and are minuted. Meetings are normally held in March, July, and November. The President usually acts as the chairperson.

The appointment process
AMI’s Elected Trustees are elected for a three-year term of office. A ballot of the membership will be held electronically each year. The successful candidate(s) will be the ones who poll the most votes. The term of office will end at the third AGM following appointment (re-appointments are permitted for one further term of office, after which a one-year break period is required).

How to nominate yourself
We invite you to nominate yourself to stand for the position of trustee, which you can do via an online form below. Nominations are invited from current members of AMI. Applications will be reviewed by a small panel of trustees and AMI members selected randomly to ensure impartiality. The purpose of this review is to ensure that all candidates are of an adequate standing to become a trustee of AMI. The applications will be anonymised to seek to minimise the risk of unconscious bias when assessing the candidates.

The roles and responsibilities of trustees are described in the Resources section on the right hand side of this website.
